Much More About SIBO, ProGurt & Customer Feedback.
What is SIBO and Why It Matters
It is clear from research that SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) is one of the biggest modern epidemics—almost on par with Covid-19. While it’s not infectious, it is a man-made epidemic caused by overexposure to antibiotics, glyphosate, pesticides, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, chlorinated water, and certain medications.
These exposures can allow fecal microbes to overpopulate the colon and then ascend into the small intestine, where they don’t belong. The small intestine is designed to absorb nutrients, not house bacteria. These microbes die off quickly but shed toxic by-products—called endotoxins—which can then leak into the bloodstream and affect the brain, heart, thyroid and beyond. This is called endotoxemia.
SIBO Signs and Why Early Action Matters
The list of SIBO signs is staggering. Recognising them early gives you the best chance to correct the imbalance naturally. For the past 10 months, we’ve personally used ProGurt Classic and ProGurt Core, and we’ve noticed exceptional benefits. Restoring the small intestine with beneficial bacteria that produce natural bacteriocins (antibiotics made by good bacteria) is essential to overcoming SIBO.
How SIBO Develops
SIBO occurs when bacteria from the large intestine overgrow in the small intestine. Your microbiome affects everything from immune response to bone health, hormone balance, and digestion.
Normally, food moves smoothly from stomach to small intestine to colon. But interference from nerve damage, medications, or poor diet can allow bacteria to linger and multiply in the small intestine, causing imbalance.
Causes of SIBO include:
- Nerve or muscle dysfunction in the digestive tract
- Frequent antibiotic, steroid, or antacid use
- Diets high in sugar or refined carbohydrates
- Age-related decline in stomach acid production
- Chronic stress
Symptoms Associated with SIBO
- Gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort
- Constipation or diarrhoea (linked to methane or hydrogen gas)
- IBS, food intolerances, and inflammatory conditions
- Fat malabsorption—large, pale, smelly stools
- Skin issues like rosacea or eczema
- Fatigue, brain fog, depression, and anxiety
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Autoimmune conditions
- Menstrual disruptions and endometriosis
- Restless legs, fibromyalgia, and even fatty liver
Testing for SIBO
If you suspect SIBO, there are three helpful lab tests:
- Breath Test – Measures hydrogen and methane gases after consuming a sugar substrate.
- Urine Test – Detects bacterial by-products but not gas type.
- Stool Test – Evaluates flora balance and screens for parasites or candida.
The Link Between Inflammation and Gut Health
SIBO causes chronic inflammation, which begins in the gut and spreads throughout the body. A permeable intestinal wall allows unwanted toxins into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response. This inflammation has been linked to Parkinson’s, MS, autism, anxiety, and depression.
SIBO Remedies and Natural Approaches
Treating SIBO isn’t a quick fix—it requires dietary changes, stress reduction, and probiotic support.
Key Lifestyle Changes:
- Remove wheat, high sugar, and refined carbohydrates
- Reduce grain intake
- Eat fibre-rich vegetables, antioxidant fruits, fish, and moderate meat
- Stay hydrated
Probiotic Support: ProGurt
Earth & Thyme recommends: Use ProGurt for 4 weeks, then a maintenance dose daily (about 125ml). We enjoy ours at lunch with berries or seeds. It has a mildly tart taste, as it should when correctly cultured.
You can also get creative: freeze into ice cream, use like sour cream on baked potatoes, or fold into no-bake cheesecakes. Just don’t cook it—heat kills the beneficial bacteria.

- Minerals – Especially calcium, zinc, iron, copper, and magnesium
