In a hurry?

Roll out Kraft or white paper, sponge paint onto the underside of fresh leaves, press them down and lift to reveal your print. Let dry, then wrap and finish with a sprig of herb or a dried orange slice.

What you will need

  • A roll of Kraft or white paper
  • Paint sponge or sponge brush
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paper plate (for your paint blobs)
  • Wax paper
  • Fresh leaves

Step-by-step directions

  1. Roll out the paper. Spread your Kraft or white paper out on a flat surface. It should be as smooth and flat as possible.
  2. Set up your paints. Squeeze small blobs of acrylic paint onto the paper plate so they are easy to dab with your sponge.
  3. Create a paint station. Use another piece of paper as a paint station where you prepare the leaves with paint before printing onto your wrapping paper.
  4. Prepare the leaf. Place a leaf on the paint station, wrong side (vein side) up. Using the sponge brush, gently dab the underside of the leaf with paint. Coat it evenly – it should be covered, but not so thick that you lose the delicate detail.
  5. Print onto the paper. Carefully place the painted side of the leaf down onto the Kraft or white paper where you would like your print.
  6. Use wax paper to press. Place a piece of wax paper on top of the leaf and press down gently with your hand. This helps keep things neat and spreads the paint evenly.
  7. Reveal the botanical transfer. Gently peel away the wax paper and then lift the leaf to reveal your botanical print. Repeat the process, creating any pattern you like, using different types of leaves. You can also add stamps if you wish.
  8. Let it dry and wrap. Allow the paint to dry completely. Then use your paper for simple, stunning gift wrapping. Finish with a fresh herb sprig or a dried orange slice for an extra special touch.

Why your gifts will love this

  • Each sheet of paper is completely unique, with its own pattern and character.
  • Natural textures from the leaves create beautifully soft, organic prints.
  • It is a gentle, screen-free activity that encourages you to slow down and play.
  • You can customise colours and leaves to match the season or the person receiving the gift.

Good to know

  • Test your leaf and paint on a small scrap of paper first to check coverage and detail.
  • Protect your table with old newspaper or a cloth, especially when working with little ones.
  • Glossy leaves often give crisper prints, while softer leaves create more muted, dreamy shapes.
  • This technique works beautifully for birthdays, festive wrapping and handmade gifts all year round.

However you use it, homemade botanical wrapping paper turns gift giving into more of a ritual – a chance to pause, breathe and enjoy the simple pleasure of making something with your hands.
